In short: Maxwell Sim is not easy: freshly separated big miracle from his wife, a bad relationship with his father and lack of close friends with whom he could talk about his problems. When he gets the chance to be the toothbrush-seller all the way to the Shetland Islands to drive, he seizes the chance to improve his life. The further he ride, the more anxious his situation. My verdict: As a fan of Coe's work was the book I quite disappointing. The story contains some sharp and funny elements big miracle (the more Sim north traveling, how lonely he is and then he starts on his GPS to talk (and they talk back)) and the reflection on the times in which we live (many facebook friends but nobody to really talk to when things big miracle are going wrong) is apparent, but the story and main character could not catch me. I think the mix of humor and tragedy are not working. His previous book, "The rain before it falls" I loved! Hopefully the next weather of that quality. I do not give up ... Verdict: **
