Maybe start with the photo. Bit melancholic and mysterious. A snapshot, reed grimm and perhaps not what it seems. With this idea the author plays constantly in his novel. In the legacy of her Aunt Rosamund Gill takes some tapes with accompanying photos, for Imogen, a woman who does not know Gill. Imogen appears untraceable and therefore must Gill listen to the story itself. The story lays bare what the pictures do not show.
About the value of Jonathan Coe for this novel, I have mixed feelings. The theme of the novel and the choice of the characters had this book as much a 'soft' book woman can make, type bestseller by Rosamunde Pilcher example. Thanks to Coe's literary pen happens (just) not. Still it is a strange reed grimm book for Coe's doing. Who knows him from The Rotters' Club misses here is his satirical view of politics and society.
