After graduating from St. Patrick’s High School, Skinner went to Saint Mary’s, where he was part of a national championship football team in 2001. Realizing range evoque he “needed to get out of Halifax," Skinner transferred to Mount A, where the Mounties won just once while he was earning a degree in history and classics.
“But about a year after I graduated, I suffered a traumatic brain injury," he said. “I was in a coma for three weeks, doctors weren’t sure if I was going to be able to walk again, or what kind of function I’d range evoque be able to do. I spent three months in the hospital, bedridden, kind of comprehending what happened.
Skinner still bears the scar from the downtown Halifax assault, but he resolved to help other young people not make the mistakes that put him in danger. He’s spoken at YMCA conferences about giving back to the community and counsels kids at the Community Y, one of four jobs he holds down.
“I didn’t know what I was going to do, but I knew I had a passion for working out and fitness. So I became a personal trainer, I started working at Slim Gyms, and from there I went on to start doing boot camps on my own, and I’ve been doing that for three or four years now.
“I’ve kind of changed how I work out. When I was in high school and university, I lifted like a powerlifter — really heavy weight, short rest times and limited reps. Now, that’s too hard on the body, even at 30, so it’s a lot of high reps, low weight. I’m not big on going for runs, but I use a treadmill in the morning, sometimes an elliptical.
“The kids here think I’m crazy, with the stuff I eat every day. My wife is in great shape as well, and she’s all about organics, quinoa and all these fruits and vegetables. The days that I’m working 16 or 17 hours, whatever range evoque she had for supper, she’ll pack it up for me in the morning. A lot of the stuff, I don’t even know what I’m eating, but you can tell it’s healthy."
